Civil War veteran cabinet card [picture], not before 1865.

Cabinet card photograph of Civil War veteran William Matzke who served in Company B, 1st Wisconsin Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War. The portrait was taken sometime after the war and shows Matzke in civilian clothing and wearing a GAR pin. Originally from Prussia, Matzke moved to Decatur, Wisconsin sometime before enlisting in 1863. Census data between 1880 and 1920 indicated that Matzke and his family moved to Seward, Nebraska, where he worked as a farmer. A pension record also shows that he died sometime before February 1929, which is when his wife begins placing claims as a widow. The photograph was taken by Excelsior Artem Studios (Nebraska).
